Exploring Bangkok's Ancient Canals: A Journey Down the 'Venice of the East'

One of the experiences I've always wanted to try in Bangkok is exploring its ancient canals, or "klongs," and see the city from a whole new perspective. So, we decided to embark on the Co Van Kessel longboat river tour, which promised to take us "off the beaten path" and into the heart of local life.

One of the experiences I've always wanted to try in Bangkok is exploring its ancient canals, or "klongs," and see the city from a whole new perspective. So, we decided to embark on the Co Van Kessel longboat river tour, which promised to take us "off the beaten path" and into the heart of local life.

Setting Sail on the Longtail Boat

Our adventure began at 10:00 AM, when we boarded the traditional longtail boat after a short walk from the starting point in Chinatown. With the sun shining above and a gentle breeze in the air, we were all set for a 2-hour exploration, the cost only 1550 THB per person.

Crossing the Chao Phraya River to Thonburi, we were immediately transported into a world that felt far removed from the bustling city streets. The waterways opened up, and we glided past ancient wooden houses on stilts, temples, and markets that seemed untouched by time.

A Glimpse into the Canal Life

With our experienced local guide leading the way, we delved into the daily lives of the people living along the canals. Our small group size allowed for a more personalized experience, and we made several short stops to interact with the community, including visiting a local temple where we got to witness Buddhist rituals.

At one point, we even stopped at a local market, depending on the time and day of the week, which was filled with vibrant colors, enticing aromas, and friendly faces.

The ever-changing cityscape and the dynamic character of Bangkok meant that each day on this tour was a new adventure. We felt genuinely connected to the REAL Bangkok, away from typical tourist attractions.

Challenges and Highlights

We were informed about the possibility of unpredictable weather, especially during the rainy season. Though a bit of rain would add to the authenticity of the experience, we were fortunate to have clear skies throughout our journey.

Our guide, who spoke fluent English, focused more on the interactive experience rather than narrating historical facts or figures, which made the whole journey feel more alive.

The return trip to River City pier via the majestic Chaophya River provided incredible views of the bridges and skyline of Bangkok.

Final Thoughts

Wearing light, comfortable clothing, a hat, and sports sandals, we felt at ease during our tour. The liberal use of sunscreen came in handy, and our cameras were always ready to capture the unique experience.

From the serenity of the waterways to the richness of the local culture, this tour was an unforgettable part of our Bangkok exploration. If you have an open mind and a big smile, I highly recommend taking this journey into Bangkok's ancient heart. The Co Van Kessel longboat river tour is a must-do experience that shows a side of Bangkok many travelers never get to see.
